The Luftwaffe had also received other harsh lessons. Although the Messerschmitt 109s had proved capable of protecting the bombers and performed well against the Hurricane and Spitfire, the 110 was hardly able to protect itself, and the Stuka had proved extremely vulnerable, especially when caught in its bombing dive.

On 1st August, Hitler issued Directive 17. This made it clear that a pre-condition for the invasion - which was eventually set for 15th September - was the defeat of Fighter Command. Goering still thought the task could be done in a few days and named the operation to achieve it Adlerangriff , the Attack of the Eagle. All he needed was a few days of good weather.

While he waited for a favourable forecast, he shifted the emphasis of attacks onto coastal airfields and installations, including RDF sites, softening up the defences in preparation for the final assault.

Adlerangriff

Adlertag , Eagle Day, was set for 13th August. They had a rehearsal on the 12th .

In line with the plan for Adlerangriff , the bombers set off to attack radar stations and airfields from medium heights. Their fighter escort stayed high, peering down through the interlacing cloud layers in a search for RAF fighters. When they did see Spitfires and Hurricanes, Park’s tactics meant they were few in number, so they stayed high, waiting for formations large enough to merit an attack.
